1. 1 Samuel 16:13-14 states that Saul was the king (authority figure) over all of Israel and was plagued by an evil spirit. Share about a time when you had to deal with an ungodly authority figure like Saul ruling over you in your family, church, or workplace.
2. Pastor Paul preached on the 4 things we need to remember when we have to handle ungodly authorities that rule over us.
#1. Remember, God give His Authority to those with problem solving ability.
#2. Remember, the Anointing will bring success and the jealousy of self-promoting, ambitious people.
#3. Remember, God will allow demonized authority figures to rule over us.
#4. Remember to serve the needy while you yourself are in great need.
Which of these things to remember is the hardest one for you? Explain why.
3. What are some giants (problems) you have run from in your past? Since we now know giants are opportunities through which success comes, not obstacles in the way of success, are you now willing to look at the giants in your life and say, "Where have you been? I have been training for you all my life!"
4. How would you respond if God allowed a Saul-like figure to chase you for 14 years?
5. How do you serve when you are in great need?
How To Handle Ungodly Authorities
For if by the transgression of the one, death reigned through the one, much more those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.
I Samuel 16:13-14
Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon David from that day forward. And Samuel arose and went to Ramah. Now the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord terrorized him.
I Samuel 18:10-16
10 Now it came about on the next day that an evil spirit from God came mightily upon Saul, and he raved in the midst of the house, while David was playing the harp with his hand, as usual; and a spear was in Saul’s hand. 11 Saul hurled the spear for he thought, “I will pin David to the wall.” But David escaped from his presence twice. 12 Now Saul was afraid of David, for the Lord was with him but had departed from Saul. 13 Therefore Saul removed him from his presence and appointed him as his commander of a thousand; and he went out and came in before the people. 14 David was prospering in all his ways for the Lord was with him. 15 When Saul saw that he was prospering greatly, he dreaded him. 16 But all Israel and Judah loved David, and he went out and came in before them.
I Samuel 18:28-30
28 When Saul saw and knew that the Lord was with David, and that Michal, Saul’s daughter, loved him, 29 then Saul was even more afraid of David. Thus Saul was David’s enemy continually. 30 Then the commanders of the Philistines went out to battle, and it happened as often as they went out, that David behaved himself more wisely than all the servants of Saul. So his name was highly esteemed.
How To Handle Ungodly Authorities
I Samuel 17:34-36, 51
34 But David said to Saul, “Your servant was tending his father’s sheep. When a lion or a bear came and took a lamb from the flock, 35 I went out after him and attacked him, and rescued it from his mouth; and when he rose up against me, I seized him by his beard and struck him and killed him. 36 Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear; and this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, since he has taunted the armies of the living God.”
51 Then David ran and stood over the Philistine and took his sword and drew it out of its sheath and killed him, and cut off his head with it. When the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they fled.
The sure sign of the anointing of the Holy Spirit upon one’s life is that you get a lot of problems to solve.
Many Christians have never seen a problem they couldn't run from.
I Samuel 18:9, 12, 15, 29:
9 Saul looked at David with suspicion from that day on.
12 Now Saul was afraid of David, for the Lord was with him but had departed from Saul.
15 When Saul saw that he was prospering greatly, he dreaded him.
29 then Saul was even more afraid of David. Thus Saul was David’s enemy continually.
I Samuel 19:9-10
9 Now there was an evil spirit from the Lord on Saul as he was sitting in his house with his spear in his hand, and David was playing the harp with his hand. 10 Saul tried to pin David to the wall with the spear, but he slipped away out of Saul’s presence, so that he stuck the spear into the wall. And David fled and escaped that night.
I Samuel 16:14
14 Now the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord terrorized him.
-CHASED for 14 YEARS!
-Any hope of us Reigning In Life will start by realizing God loves us so much He will place a demonized authority figure over us to get the flesh flashes our of us.
-God uses the outer Saul to purge us of inner Saul.
I Samuel 22:1-2
So David departed from there and escaped to the cave of Adullam; and when his brothers and all his father’s household heard of it, they went down there to him. 2 Everyone who was in distress, and everyone who was in debt, and everyone who was discontented gathered to him; and he became captain over them. Now there were about four hundred men with him.
Those that want to Reign In Life must be brought to the caves of Adullum where they learn they are not here for what we can get but what they can give!!!
