What is truth?
The world/culture will try to confuse us
It will be difficult at times to know what is right and what is wrong
“I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. 13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.”
As a Christian:
-Received the Holy Spirit when we got saved
-Inside of us right now
-His job is to communicate with us
-Does not make us do things
-We have to listen, then decide how we will respond
Two primary ways:
He convicts us & convinces us.
“7 But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you. 8 And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment; 9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me; 10 and concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father and you no longer see Me; 11 and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged. 12 “I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth.”
“8 And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment.”
“No lie was found in their mouth; they are blameless.”
We must be dedicated to the way of Truth.
The Holy Spirit—as the Spirit of Truth—is the One who convicts us of sin in our lives.
“You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” They answered Him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never yet been enslaved to anyone; how is it that You say, ‘You will become free’?” Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is the slave of sin.”
2 Corinthians 7:10
“Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death.”
“A man who hardens his neck after much reproof will suddenly be broken beyond remedy.”
“Being in Christ” = “union with Christ”
“Every blessing is received in Christ…”
The foundation & basis for the Christian life
All blessings flow from our union with Christ
We are found in Christ (Phil. 3:9)
Preserved in Christ (Rom. 8:39)
Saved and sanctified in Christ (2 Tim. 1:9, 1 Cor. 1:30)
Walk in Christ (Col. 2:6)
Labor in Christ (1 Cor. 15:58)
Obey in Christ (Eph. 6:1)
Die in Christ (Rev. 14:13)
Live in Christ (Gal. 2:20)
Conquer in Christ (Rom. 8:37)
Christian spirituality doesn’t rest in mysticism.
It rests in a mediator.
Be WHO YOU ARE.
In Christ, we are dead to sin and alive to righteousness.
“We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.
In Christ, we are new creations so that we might live for Him, and not for ourselves.
2 Corinthians 5:15, 17
“And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again… 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!
In Christ, our sinful flesh is put to death and a new kind of life is at work within us.
“I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”
In Christ, we are no longer sons of disobedience.
Ephesians 2:4-6, 10
“But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, 5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. 6 And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus… 10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”
In Christ, we can walk as He did.
“6 So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him.”
In Christ, we are holy & precious and called to live like it.
“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 13 Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. 14 And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.”
