Life Group Questions

1.  As a group, read Romans 5:17.  Do you believe you can reign over the stress you are facing in your life?  How?

Romans 5:17  For if by transgression of the one, death reigned through the one, much more those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.

2.  Which of these four best describes where you are now in your life?

  • Fatigue from the battle
  • Future looking bleak
  • Fear you believe
  • Flight from your circumstances

We would like every Life Group member to respond to this question.  We would like to pause for a few minutes to pray over every member of the group.  The Life Group leaders will have members pray for other LG members.  Pray specifically for the issue that the LG member is facing; this is not a time to pray for whatever comes to mind, but specifically for what they are facing.

3.  Pastor Paul stated, "If we crumble under the pressure of life's circumstances, we will forsake the place of God's choosing and eventually seek the feelings of temporary peace from the enemy's camp and ultimately face the tremendous price of our self-preserving choices."  When have you crumbled under life's circumstances and run from His place of peace and joy?  Explain when this was and what were the results of your choice.

4.  How do you encourage yourself in the LORD?

Sermon Notes

Stress Management

Romans 5:17
For if by the transgression of the one, death reigned through the one, much more those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.

I Samuel 27:1-7
Then David said to himself, “Now I will perish one day by the hand of Saul. There is nothing better for me than to escape into the land of the Philistines. Saul then will despair of searching for me anymore in all the territory of Israel, and I will escape from his hand.” So David arose and crossed over, he and the six hundred men who were with him, to Achish the son of Maoch, king of Gath. And David lived with Achish at Gath, he and his men, each with his household, even David with his two wives, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the Carmelitess, Nabal’s widow. Now it was told Saul that David had fled to Gath, so he no longer searched for him. Then David said to Achish, “If now I have found favor in your sight, let them give me a place in one of the cities in the country, that I may live there; for why should your servant live in the royal city with you?” So Achish gave him Ziklag that day; therefore Ziklag has belonged to the kings of Judah to this day. The number of days that David lived in the country of the Philistines was a year and four months.

Stress Fractures Can Cause Faith Leaks Leading To Hope Lost

Fatigue from the battle
Future that looked bleak
Fear that we believe
Flight seems what’s best

There is a world of difference between a person who has a big problem and a person who makes a problem big.

Distress is the Result of Reacting to Stress without Faith and Running in Fear

I Samuel 30:3-6
When David and his men came to the city, behold, it was burned with fire, and their wives and their sons and their daughters had been taken captive. Then David and the people who were with him lifted their voices and wept until there was no strength in them to weep. Now David’s two wives had been taken captive, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess and Abigail the widow of Nabal the Carmelite. Moreover David was greatly distressed because the people spoke of stoning him, for all the people were embittered, each one because of his sons and his daughters. But David strengthened himself in the Lord his God.

If we crumble under the pressure of life’s circumstances we will forsake the place of God’s choosing and eventually seek the feelings of temporary peace from the enemy’s camp and ultimately face the tremendous price of our self-preserving choices.

Success is the Outcome of Rebounding and Responding in Faith to Stress

"But David encouraged himself in the Lord his God."

I am chosen by God!
I am formed and fashioned by God!
I am the apple of His eye!
I am the head and not the tail!
I am full of faith!

I reject stress that leads to distress!
I will NOT operate in FEAR!
I will be successful because I will operate in faith!!!
